Wausau West Boys Win State Curling
Congratulations to the Wausau West boy’s curling team for outlasting the field Friday and Saturday and winning the high school state tournament.
The team of Hunter Britton, Micah Mathias, Ryan McCallum, and Carson Kirsch won the competition with a 9-7 victory over the team from Poynette in the final contest.
In the girl’s competition, it was a repeat of last year as Poynette defended their state title by outshooting Stevens Point.
The tournament was held in the Wausau Curling Center on Curling Way on the city’s southeast side. The stands were jammed with friends and families rooting for the 15 different high schools competing.
Coordinated by Jim Wendling of Wausau West and Jim Shlimovitz of Portage, the high school championships have been held since 1959 (boy’s competition) and 1976 (girl’s competition).
Teams aiming for the titles were from Wausau West, Wausau East, DC Everest, Medford, Stevens Point, Kimberley, Appleton East, Marshfield, Lodi, Portage, Poynette, Pardeeville and Neenah.
Wendling thanked the volunteers who provided the services necessary for a successful tournament, including the Wausau East and West high school parents, the Wausau Curling Club volunteers, and the ice committee. “In the true spirit of curling, these volunteers helped make memories that will last a lifetime,” he said.
