Canadians defeat Wausau curlers

Wausau, WI -- The Canadian men’s curling team continued its dominance of the U.S.-Canadian Can-Am Curling Cup yesterday at the Wausau Curling Club.
The Canadians defeated all local five teams with a total score of 50-19 in five matches on the Wausau Curling Club ice. It gave them an aggregate score of 420 to 257 across 11 competitions against US curling teams on the current tour. Addtional coverage in this local news story.
The tour began in Duluth-Superior Nov. 2 and concludes Nov. 19 in Detroit. The tour visited the Medford, Marshfield and Stevens Point Curling Clubs over the weekend. Next, the tour heads to Waupaca and then to the Madison and Milwaukee areas.
The Can-Am Cup occurs every five years, with Canadian curlers visiting as many as 25 curling clubs in the U.S., and the U.S. curlers visiting Canada in exchange. In the 2019 competition, the first, the U.S. won the cup in a narrow victory. Event chair Randy Brander said the event was a success and complimented the club’s volunteers and ice crew, including curlers who hosted the Canadian team.
The Can-Am event was created in 2018 from “a shared vision of promoting the sport of curling and strengthening the relationship between members of curling clubs in both countries,” according to curling information.
Wausau teams announced for CANAM curling tour event

The Wausau Curling Club will send five teams of local curlers onto the ice this Sunday (Nov. 10) to play against the Canadian men’s teams in the 2024 CANAM Cup Curling Tour.
The competition will begin at 3 p.m. at the Wausau Curling Center, 1920 Curling Way, Wausau. An arched-broom welcome to the Wausau facility will occur when the Canadian team arrives around 2 p.m. A bagpipe opening ceremony will follow at 2:45. Admission is free to everyone., and the public is invited.
Chair of the local event Randy Brandner announced the following teams:
- Team Aicher (David Aicher, Chuck Miller, Scott Campbell and Susan Peloquin).
- Team Goetsch (Todd Goetsch, Scott Gorichs, Don McTavish, and Randy Brandner);
- Team Sandquist (Corey and Susan Sandquist, Steve O’Keefe, and Ron Klimisch);
- Team Mihalus (Ryan and Anne Mihalus, Jeff Stubbe, and Mike Thomasgard);
- Team Neitzel (Pete Neitzel, Peter Dodson, Jeff and Lori Ziegel).
Each team will play a single game against the Canadians.
The CANAM Cup tour occurs every five years, with Canadian curlers coming here, then the U.S. curlers traveling to Canada. The first tour occurred in 2019 with the U.S. curlers heading north and winning by a narrow margin.
This year’s tour began in Duluth-Superior on Nov. 2, then stopped in the Twin Cities before traveling through Wisconsin visiting 16 Badger curling clubs, including Wausau. Other CANAM Cup sites in our area include the Medford, Stevens Point, Waupaca and Marshfield curling clubs.
The Canadians—representing curling clubs from Victoria, BC, to Prince Edward Island—will go on to curl at clubs in the Chicago area, then Fort Wayne, Indiana, and finish up in Detroit on Nov 19.
Scoring is aggregate; in other words, the winner will be determined using the total of points achieved in all matches on the tour.

Wausau , WI – The Wausau Curling Club will host one of the curing matches between Canadian and American curlers in the Can-Am Cup of Curling, Sunday, November 10, 2024, at the Wausau Curling Center.
The competition will feature 20 of the best men curlers from Canada against a team of men selected from the Wausau Curling Club.
Curlers will be welcomed with a broom-arch shortly after 2 p.m. and compeition will begin at 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend and watch the games live from the local club’s large spectators area. There is no charge for admission. The competition will also be streamed live on the Wausau Curling Club’s You Tube page.
The Can-Am Cup of Curling was started in 2019, when a U.S. men’s team toured 23 curling clubs in eastern Canada, playing a total of 112 games. U.S. and Canadian curlers have agreed to hold the competition every five years, alternating between U.S. and Canadian curling sites. The matches are patterned after the reciprocal U.S. and Scottish women’s curling tour.
This year, the Canadian curlers will visit curling centers in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan, playing a total of 107 games. The final match will be held Nov. 19 at the Detroit Curling Club.
Scoring is cumulative, meaning scores from all games throughout the tour are totaled, with winner scoring the most points overall. In 2019, the U.S. team was victorious, 623 to 613.
The 2024 Canadian team includes curlers from Alberta, British Columbia, NW Territories, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, PEI, Ontario, and Quebec.
