Wausau to Host National Arena Curling Championships, Oct. 23-27
Some of the best curling teams in the nation will be competing on the ice at the Wausau Curling Center, October 23-27, 2024.
The local club will be host to the 2024 National Arena Curling Championships featuring the top 12 men’s and top 12 women’s qualifying teams from throughout the United States.
Arena curling features teams who do not play at a dedicated curling rink but curl in their communities on ice used for a variety of activities like ice hockey or figure skating.
Teams will arrive in Wausau for a practice day on Wednesday, Oct. 23. Competition begins at 8 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, with the opening ceremonies set for 3 p.m. that day. Play continues Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25-26, starting at 8 a.m. The semi-finals are set for 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, and the championship match will be at 2 p.m.
The public is encouraged to attend and watch the action in the Wausau Curling Center’s large heated spectator area. Admission at the door will be $10 per day or $30 for the entire series. Children 15 and under will be admitted free. The games will also be live streamed on the Wausau Curling Club’s You Tube channel.
“Wausau has been a great partner of ours, and we’re thrilled they are able to welcome our nation’s best arena curlers in 2024,” said Dean Gemmell, USA Curling CEO. “The competitors in this event are so dedicated to the sport, putting in countless additional hours just to get on the ice in their arenas. I know they will enjoy the opportunity to play in one of the premiere curling facilities in the country.”
The Wausau’s Curling Center is one of the few in the nation featuring eight full sheets of ice dedicated solely to the sport of curling. Wausau’s Kim Susens and Steve O’Keefe, co-chairs of the event committee, both pointed out that the club and the community are known throughout the curling world for hospitality and first-rate event management.
The Wausau Club is an experienced host of national curling play, having welcomed the Men’s and Women’s Club Nationals in 2023, and the Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed Doubles National Championships in 2022.
On Sunday, November 10, the Wausau Club will be the site of one of the curling matches in the 2024 Can-Am Cup of Curling tour. Curling Canada will send a team of 20 Canadian men to participate in a three-week curling tour of the Northeast and Midwest, featuring curling competition against a U.S. men’s team.
The Wausau Curling Center is located at 1920 Curling Way on Wausau’s southeast side. The local club celebrated its 100th anniversary of curling in 2020.
