About Us

The Wausau Curling Club

The Club is a 501c3 organization and includes several hundred members. It is governed by an elected Board of Directors. Curling activity takes place from late October through March, and the various leagues and events are directed by volunteers who serve as chairs or coordinators.

One of the largest and oldest curling clubs in Wisconsin, the Wausau Curling Club was officially founded in 1925, although curling on ice in Wausau can be traced back to the early 1900s.

The Wausau Curling Center

Completed in 2012, the Wausau Curling Center is the result of our community’s century-old love of curling.

Hundreds of foundations, corporations, families, and individuals, plus cooperation from the landowner and the City of Wausau, resulted in the largest privately-owned curling facility in the United States. Eight sheets of ice, supported by the latest ice-making and maintenance equipment, enable us to accommodate large numbers of curlers and spectators for a full schedule of league play and bonspiels. The Center contains locker rooms, a glassed-in seating area for spectators, and a large social area complete with TVs, a fireplace, kitchen, and bar facilities.

We host the annual Tietge bonspiel—the largest high school competition in the United States-- the Wisconsin state high school championships,  the Badger State Winter Games competition, and many other bonspiels.  Several USA Curling sanctioned events have been held here as well.

Club history

Curling in Wausau can be traced back to the early 1900s when competitors slid rocks on the frozen Wisconsin River, tennis courts at the Y, and on neighborhood ice ponds. The Wausau Curling Club itself was formed in 1925, and until 2012, used buildings at Marathon Park to house curling games.

Hundreds of volunteers have generously given their time and talents throughout our history.

How can I learn to play the game?

The Wausau Curling Club welcomes new curlers and offers numerous Learn to Curl events for individuals and groups and corporations. Click on the Learn to Curl link.

Are there “open” leagues that are non-competitive?

Yes. For example, the morning senior league is strictly played for fun, with most participants using sticks to curl. We also offer special leagues for new curlers.

Can students and youngsters curl at the Wausau Curling Center?

Absolutely. In fact, all the area high schools have curling teams and practice and play at the Wausau Curling Center. We host the state high school curling championships, and the Tietge high school bonspiel every year. We have special Learn to Curl activities for children down to age 5.

Are there social events?

Yes. Curling is a social sport, and that’s a big part of its history.  Camaraderie and good sportsmanship are traditional features of the game. Our bonspiels bring curlers together for lively competition as well as good food and drink. The Wausau Curling Center contains a full kitchen and bar and social area with TVs and a fireplace.

Can I volunteer to help with activities?

Yes. In fact, the Club depends on volunteers for ice making, officiating, kitchen, registration, cleanup, and other activities. Each member is expected to volunteer at least 10 hours a year to club activities.
