Public invited to Learn to Curl and Curling Open House
Want to learn more about the sport of curling, and perhaps learn how to play the game yourself?
The Wausau Curling Club invites the public to a free open house at the Wausau Curling Center on Saturday, October 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
And if you’re interested in learning the game, the Club will be conducting public Learn to Curl sessions on Monday, Oct. 13, Wednesday, Oct. 15, and Monday, Oct. 20. The sessions will last from 6-8 p.m., and participants will learn how to deliver the curling stone, how to sweep it down the ice, and how to score, as well as the strategy of the game.
Members of the Curling Club will provide the instruction. “By the end of one two-hour session, participants will know how to play and will have the opportunity to join a beginners’ league if they would like to,” said Learn to Curl coordinator Tucker Diedrich. “This is a winter Olympic year so interest in curling will be at a high point.”
Participants should dress in layers, as it’s around 40 degrees in the curling area. Also, wear comfortable pants and bring a clean pair of rubber-soled gym shoes to wear on the ice. Street shoes are not permitted on the curling surface.
Pre-registration is required for the Learn to Curl sessions. Contact Diedrich at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Or pre-register at the Wausau Curling Club’s website, www.wausaucurling.org.
Cost is $10 for adults, children under 12 can attend at no charge.
Diedrich pointed out that the game can be played by youngsters, adults and seniors. Lighter stones are available for youngsters to use. Seniors often use curling push sticks if they have difficult getting down on the ice.
The open house is a “drop-in” event. Come at any time during the 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. period and take guided tours of the curling facility, the curling area, the clubhouse and spectator area, and learn how the ice is made and maintained.
