Team USA takes Silver at Junior Men’s World B Curling Championships




The USA Junior Men’s curling team took silver medals at the World B Junior Men’s curling championships today in Lohja, Finland.

The team, led by Wausau’s Wes Wendling, lost to Canada 7-4 in the championship match.

Trailing 5-4 in the last end, the Americans were unable to tie it up, and the Canadians scored two to win the tournament.

In the third-place game, Denmark defeated New Zealand 7-5.

All told the US team went 7-2 over the week-long event, and their final four finish qualified them for a spot in the Junior Men’s World Championships, to be held in Finland, beginning Feb. 17.

Curling with Wendling were Jackson Armstrong of Appleton, Kevin Tuma of St. Paul, MN, and Jackson Bestland and Caden Hebert of Eau Claire.




World Championships bound!

The USA Junior Men’s curling team beat Hungary 7-2 early today at the World B Junior Men’s Curling Championships in Finland.

The win puts them in the final four and assures them of a spot in the Junior Men’s World Championships in Finland, Feb 17-24

The team is skipped by Wausau West H.S. graduate Wes Wendling and includes Jackson Armstrong of Appleton, Caden Hebert and Jackson Bestland of Eau Claire, and Kevin Tuma of St. Paul, MN.

The Americans scored five stones early and kept the Hungary team off the board in all but two ends.

Other teams making the final four are Canada, New Zealand and Denmark. Canada eliminated powerhouse Swedan, which had scored more than 20 rocks twice in earlier games.

The U.S. team will play Denmark later this morning in the semi- finals. They defeated the Danes yesterday to gain a playoff spot. New Zealand and Canada will battle in the other semi-final.

The finals will be tomorrow at 10 a.m., Finland time (2 a/m/ US central time).

The Americans scored five in the second end to set up the victory.With Wendling are Jackson  Armstrong of Appleton, Caden Hebert and Jackson Bestland of Eau Claire and Kevin Tuma, St.Paul.The team is in flight C along with Latvia, Brazil, Denmark, New Zealand and the two teams they’ve already defeated —Hong Kong and England.Tonight they will face Latvia and tomorrow morning, New Zealand.
