Public invited to Wausau Curling open house, Learn to Curl events.
Curlers have been sliding rocks down the ice in Wausau for over 125 years, yet many in the community don’t fully understand the game or participate in it.
They’ll get a chance to learn more about curling and actually try their hand at it during public events at the Wausau Curling Center in mid-October.
The public is invited to a free public open house at the Curling Center on Sunday, Oct. 18. The facility, one of the finest and largest curling rinks in the United States, is located at 1920 curling Way on Wausau’s southeast side.
The open house begins at 12 noon and runs through 5 pm. It will be a chance to see the ice, the kitchen, seating areas, and club room and learn how the game is played. Attendees will also learn about the various leagues and opportunities to play, including the club’s programs for youth and seniors.
Then on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24 and 25, the curling club will be hosting Learn to Curl rookie clinics for those interested in learning how to play. The clinics will teach attendees how to slide on the ice and deliver the curling stone, how to sweep, and how to strategize and score.
The clinics will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on the 24th and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the 25th. Cost is $10 per person, students and children free.
Participants should wear layered clothing, comfortable trousers, and bring a clean pair of rubber-soled shoes to use on the ice, not street shoes.
